New Apprenticeships

New Apprenticeships combine vocational training and employment. The term New Apprenticeship includes traditional apprenticeships and traineeships.

A New Apprenticeship is a structured employment and training system in which New Apprentices undertake formally recognised training. This includes on-the-job and off-the-job training combined with work.

New Apprenticeships benefit both employers and New Apprentices by offering new opportunities in more industries, and more flexible training and support services.

New Apprentices are usually employed under a traineeship that lasts for one year (full-time) or two years (part-time). School-based New Apprenticeships can be undertaken while the New Apprentice is still at secondary school and take two years. After successfully completing the traineeship, the New Apprentice has a nationally recognised qualification and relevant work experience.

The Australian Government provides incentives to encourage employers to take on New Apprentices.

New Apprenticeships Centres (NACs) help employers recruit New Apprentices. The service is free and provides help with the sign-up of the apprentice and the administration of the New Apprenticeship.

More information is available from the New Apprenticeships website.

The Office of Training and Tertiary Education (OTTE) has information on courses that are available as New Apprenticeships in sport and recreation and as New Apprenticeships in arts and culture (PDF).

Group Training

Employers can employ a New Apprentice directly or choose to be a 'host employer' for a Group Training Company.

Group Training Companies help employers in small and medium businesses by employing the apprentice and then placing the apprentice with the host employer. Group Training Companies help with recruiting the apprentice, finding a training provider and developing the training program. They provide ongoing support to the employer and New Apprentice.
